OpenAI has opened its self-serve ads platform to businesses, and Obility is already testing it. We got access, built out an account, and ran through the setup process so we can share what the platform actually looks like before recommending it to clients.

What Is ChatGPT Advertising?

ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear within the ChatGPT interface for users on the free tier. OpenAI is running a self-serve model similar to what Google and Meta built years ago, where advertisers create campaigns, set targeting parameters, and pay per click or impression. The format is text-based with a square image, which keeps things straightforward.

The audience is smaller than Google or Meta today, but CPCs are low and competition is thin. That combination is worth paying attention to.

How to Sign Up for the OpenAI Ads Platform

The sign-up page is live at ads.openai.com. OpenAI has also published a full overview of the self-serve rollout on its blog if you want more background before applying.

Getting approved requires a few pieces of business information:

  • Business name
  • EIN (Employer Identification Number)
  • Business address

After submitting, approval typically takes about 72 hours. OpenAI dropped the previous $50,000 minimum spend requirement when it opened the platform to all U.S. businesses, so there is no minimum threshold to clear. That makes it practical to run a controlled test without committing significant budget.

Once approved, the account setup follows a familiar structure: campaigns sit at the top level, ad groups live inside each campaign, and ads are built within the ad groups.

How ChatGPT Ad Targeting & Tracking Works

Targeting in ChatGPT Ads is intentionally broad. You describe what you want to reach, and OpenAI’s system interprets that intent to serve your ads. There are no keyword lists, demographic checkboxes, or audience segments to configure the way you would in Google Ads.

If that sounds similar to Google’s broad match or Performance Max, the comparison is fair. Broad intent-based targeting can generate wasted spend, so setting up proper conversion tracking from the start is important.

ChatGPT Ad Format

Each ad includes:

  • Title: 50 characters
  • Description: 100 characters
  • Image: Square format

That simplicity is a feature. There are no rotating headlines, pinned descriptions, or ad customizers to manage. The format forces clarity. If you cannot explain your offer in 50 characters, that is a messaging problem worth solving before buying media.

Conversion Tracking Options

OpenAI offers two tracking methods: website conversion events and a conversion API. Both are standard approaches that most marketing teams are already familiar with. Setting up one of these before launching is necessary to measure whether the channel is generating results.

Who Should Test ChatGPT Ads

The platform is early, and the paid ChatGPT subscriber base, which skews toward power users, does not see ads. That means the current ad-eligible audience is the free tier. A meaningful share of B2B buyers and technical decision-makers have moved to paid plans or are using other AI tools entirely.

That said, three targeting approaches are worth testing now:

  • Competitor brand terms: Capture users who are searching for alternatives or comparisons
  • Use case terms: Reach users who are asking ChatGPT questions related to problems your product solves
  • Core solution categories: Appear when users are researching topics adjacent to your offering

The CPCs are low enough that a small budget allocation can produce meaningful data without significant risk.

ChatGPT Ads Setup Checklist

Before launching your first campaign, work through this list:

  • Gather your business name, EIN, and business address
  • Submit your application and wait for approval (approximately 72 hours)
  • Define your targeting intent: competitor brands, use cases, or solution categories
  • Write your ad title (50 characters max)
  • Write your ad description (100 characters max)
  • Prepare a square image asset
  • Set up website conversion tracking or connect the conversion API
  • Choose your bidding model: CPC (cost-per-click) or CPM (cost-per-thousand impressions)
  • Set a test budget with no performance expectations for the first 30 days
  • Review targeting breadth and monitor for irrelevant spend early

How Obility Manages ChatGPT Ads for Clients

For clients who want to test the channel, we handle account setup, ad copy, conversion tracking configuration, and ongoing performance review. We also integrate ChatGPT Ads reporting into the same analytics framework we use for your other paid channels so you are comparing performance on an apples-to-apples basis.

If you want to get your brand in front of an audience using AI to research buying decisions, this channel is worth a conversation. Get in touch with our team to talk through whether ChatGPT Ads belong in your media mix.
