How Reddit Captures Bottom‑of‑Funnel Searches (and What Brands Can Actually Control)

Google search results, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity surface Reddit threads alongside, and often above, traditional product pages. When someone searches “[Brand] pricing” they’re just as likely to see a Reddit discussion as your own pricing page. Here's how to optimize your content to influence BOFU searches.

When buyers are close to making a decision on a product or service, they are on Google, the LLMs or Reddit searching:

  • “[Your Company] reviews”
  • “[Your Company] vs [Competitor]”
  • “[Your Company] pricing”
  • “Is [Your Company] worth it”
  • “[Your Company] alternatives”These are high-value, high-conversion searches that happen right before someone commits. These searchers have already done their research, they know the category, and now they’re vetting vendors.

What’s changed is where those searches land. These BOFU searches often now end up on Reddit. Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT pull Reddit discussions as trusted real user sources. When someone searches “[Your Brand] reviews,” Google doesn’t just show your product page anymore. It shows Reddit threads where actual users discuss their experience with your product. Google often ranks these threads above your own marketing pages.

According to a 2024 study by Semrush, Reddit URLs appeared in 15% of all AI Overview results for software comparison queries. That number has grown each month since Google strengthened its Reddit content partnership in early 2024.

Why Reddit Shows Up in BOFU Searches

Reddit consistently surfaces for BOFU queries because it aligns with what search engines and AI systems value:

  • Perceived independence: Reddit discussions aren’t owned by the brand, which makes them feel more credible than vendor‑authored pages.
  • Freshness over time: Threads continue to accumulate comments, updates, and corrections, signaling ongoing relevance.
  • Depth of discussion: Detailed replies, follow‑up questions, and debate create context that short review pages lack.

Reddit threads often answer the exact question buyers are asking: “What’s it really like to use this product?” That makes them strong candidates for ranking and for being summarized by generative AI.

A Critical Clarification: What Brands Can (and Can’t) Control

What brands can do is:

  • Participate transparently
  • Add accurate context where buyers are already asking questions
  • Maintain an owned Reddit presence that acts as a reference point

If you don’t engage at all, the narrative still forms, just without your input.

The BOFU Reddit Strategy, Step-by-Step
Step 1. Find Your BOFU Reddit Opportunities

Start by understanding where Reddit already wins for your brand and competitors.

  • Search site:reddit.com”your company name” and “competitor name”
  • Compile all threads
    • Look for threads ranking for reviews, pricing, or comparisons
    • Look for threads with complaints, this is an opportunity to have Product or CS follow up, or share updates that may have fixed the complaint now
  • Note which subreddits host these discussions and join them from your branded user account (also see how to set up Reddit for your brand)
  • Check what questions buyers ask repeatedly in these threads

Use tools like Semrush, or SEOmonitor, to spot branded and competitor keywords where Reddit ranks in the top 10 in Google search, Google AI Overviews, and LLMs. Look for:

  • Comparison queries: “[Your Brand] vs [Competitor]”
  • Review queries: “[Your Brand] reviews”
  • Pricing queries: “[Your Brand] cost”
  • Alternative queries: “[Your Brand] alternatives”
  • Your priority KW terms

Then map where you don’t have coverage. Those gaps are opportunities to create helpful, authentic threads within a branded subreddit.

Example: If you run a project management tool and Reddit ranks for “Asana vs Monday” but not “Asana vs [Your Brand],” that’s a gap. If users are asking “Is [Your Brand] good for agencies?” and no one has answered well, that’s an opportunity.

Document these gaps in a spreadsheet. Prioritize based on search volume, value to your brand and where you have a strong answer to offer. You can create relevant posts in your branded subreddit, under your brand account. For example, in your own subreddit, it’s acceptable to create content around your pricing, how you differentiate yourself from competitors, and your customer case studies. Hopefully this content lives on your website already, and you can adjust it to fit Reddit. The goal is then that “[Your Brand] vs Competitor” post starts to rank organically and be sited by LLMs. But what if your organic website pages are already ranking? That’s great. Now your Reddit page is taking up more of the SERP and your controlling more of the conversation. Add-on a paid ad strategy, and AIO focused organic content strategy, and your getting to SERP domination.

Step 2. Participate in Existing Threads (Carefully)

Join existing discussions, but do it with transparency and tact. You’re not selling. You’re adding value to the decision process. This is where we will piggyback off of already ranking threads that are of value to you.

Reddit users can smell marketing from a mile away. If you show up with a brand account and post “Check out our amazing product,” you’ll get downvoted and your post will likely be removed. You may be banned from the subreddit.

Instead, contribute like a human from your user account who has experience with the products being discussed.

Here are real-world Reddit threads that effectively replace the hypothetical examples. These authentic discussions showcase the level of detail, specific metrics, and “in-the-trenches” experience that Reddit users reward.

Step 3. Build a Branded Subreddit as an Anchor

A branded subreddit provides an owned reference point that still carries Reddit’s credibility.

Benefits include:

  • A centralized place for pricing, comparisons, and FAQs
  • Visibility for branded Reddit searches
  • A consistent source for search engines and AI systems to reference

Think of it as a community‑driven extension of your website — not a replacement.

Step 4. Optimize net new posts for Visibility

When creating new Reddit threads (especially in a branded subreddit), structure matters.

Well‑performing threads typically include:

  • Natural mentions of reviews, pricing, comparisons, or alternatives
  • Titles that mirror real search intent (questions, comparisons, cost‑focused phrasing)
  • Clear sections for longer posts to improve readability
  • Ongoing engagement through replies, edits, and updates

The goal is to make the thread genuinely useful and easy to understand. Update threads as things change. If your pricing updates or you add a new feature, edit the post to reflect that. Respond to comments thoroughly. If someone asks “Does this work with Salesforce?” and you answer with detail, that exchange adds value to the thread and improves its ranking potential.

The Bottom Line

Reddit quietly became one of the most important BOFU channels on the web. It feeds both Google and AI search with what real people think about your brand. If you’re not shaping that conversation (and listening to it), someone else will. AI models will pull from whatever they find, good or bad.

Start small.  Audit where Reddit already ranks for your brand terms. Find gaps. Create one helpful thread per week. Build your subreddit. Engage authentically.
